Tom - The concept of rating ball dynamics is the neatest thing I've seen to date. I have a garage full of high priced doorstops that I was sure would fill a niche in my game, but didn't. No more! It makes perfect sense that if a bowler's Primary Numbers are in their comfort zone, then the Secondary categories will tweak the reaction to accommodate varying lane conditions.

Thanks,

Tom in New Mexico

To Bowling Ball Dynamics. I would like to congratulate you for this kind of work you are doing. This is what I call a REAL bowling ball guide.

Thank you,

Nick from Greece

I would like to take this time to thank you for this service. It really works! As per your recommendations I purchased two balls. Before last night I had not been able to string together more than 3 in a row for a month, but last night I started off with the front 8 with the new ball. I had been hitting the pocket consistently with my other equipment, but I just couldn't carry. It's funny that these little numbers can mean so much to pin carry. I have recommended your site to many of my friends and will continue to do so.

Thanks again.

Jim from Virginia

I received the package last night. The presentation is impressive, and the numbers page is easy to understand. Even if a bowler didn't really understand what the numbers meant, your translation of rankings is clear.

Thanks Tom. The survey is great and I'm sure I will put it to good use. I'm pretty sure that one of my friends will take the survey as he was very impressed with what he saw.

Once again thanks,

Mike in Australia

Hello Tom, A friend and I both just recently ordered and received our ball dynamics breakdowns. I just wanted to let you know that we both loved the useful information. We are both very excited to start punching up some new equipment according to our primary numbers. This service that you are doing should help any competitive bowler that is looking for maximum performance when purchasing a bowling ball. I can't say enough how much help I think this program will be and is. Thanks again for the great work.

Jason from Nebraska

I have been studying what has been written about every ball for years, but have not had the resources to test many of them. I believe this is a very valuable tool that would be beneficial to anybody. With all the balls coming out every month, this would help narrow down the choices greatly. Using this makes it very easy to select a ball for the condition a person is looking for.

Thank-you,

Guy in Ohio

Hello - I’ve either run or owned a pro shop for 21 years, and being very skeptical, I recently had you to analyze my equipment. I am very impressed. The layout of the information that you supply is excellent and pretty easy to comprehend. You can bet that all my teammates will hear about you, and I am also recommending your site to my customers.

Well done,

Dave from West Virginia

Dear Tom, The survey became a great tool for my Pro-Shop and my first 14 players that took the Survey were very impressed with what they saw. One by one as they switched to Numbers balls their satisfaction becomes bigger and bigger. For me this is the most technical inquiry that I ever faced and I feel very lucky that I found your web-page. Along with Bowling This Month magazine, BowlingBallDynamics.com is the only place where somebody can find so much accumulated technical information.  Keep up the good work.

Chris’ Pro-Shop, Athens, Greece

Tom - I’m a cranker, and all of the shops around here have always advised me to buy the same kind of equipment. However, my Analysis didn’t agree with them, so when I chose a ball from my match list, they all tried to talk me out of it. Well, I bought the ball anyway and have had 2 honor scores with it already. What a difference! I’ve been bowling with the wrong balls all this time. In five years, your survey will be the way everyone will buy their bowling balls.

Thanks so much,

Carl from California

Dear Tom - I’ve always had access to a lot of equipment - maybe too much! After receiving my Analysis, I took only balls I owned that showed up on my Lists to a scratch tournament - on tough conditions - and WON. Many thanks for the great information.

Tom - The layout of the information that you supply is excellent and pretty easy to comprehend. You can bet that all my teammates will hear about you and hopefully if they are as willing to try your ideas as much as I then you will be hearing from them. Thank you for your time.

Bob from Connecticut

Tom - Well I drilled two balls up yesterday per your list. Before I got my Analysis, the first ball was on my wish list but definitely not the second. When the first ball had too much surface to stay straight but not enough surface/drilling to recover from too deep, I pulled out the second ball. After throwing it only for 2 balls in practice I go the first 5, 4 pin and strike out till 11th frame for 268. I was surprised you picked that ball. The friction rating must be the thing that decided that choice. Now I see your logic.

Thanks a lot,

Don in Ohio

HI! What you have done with these dynamics is an absolutely monumental task. I read all the reviews I can from magazines and newsletters, and while I find these very informative, they fall short when it comes to actually helping a bowler match up to proper equipment for their exact style. Thank you so much for such an exhaustive resource.

Sincerely,

Ken from Illinois

Hi, Tom. When I first found your web site, I thought pretty cool stuff! I've always wanted to understand my equipment better. It looks like you've put a lot of time into this unique research. I don't buy new equipment often, but took the survey anyway, and will buy a ball off my list for next season. Good luck with your business!

Cindy from Florida

Tom, Got the analysis in the mail and it is real nice. It appears that my pro shop guy and I were on the correct track when we did my "arsenal evaluation" last spring. From the numbers I see and the information we have garnered, the top 3 choices are real close to what we had in mind.

Thanks,

Harold in California

Purchase your Equipment Analysis before you buy another ball.

Wondering why I liked some balls more than others, I wrote a program that tracked the individual averages for each ball I owned, which confirmed that my favorites were also my highest scoring balls.  Then I ranked my equipment by average, and attached each ball’s RG data to my rankings.  I wanted to look for similarities that would show what worked best (or worst) for me on each type of lane condition.

To my surprise, I discovered that I scored best with a single range of RG values, regardless of what condition I was on!  Even when I split my list into balls for house and sport league conditions, or my "A" game and "B" game releases, I favored the same characteristics on both lists.  When I added other data like back end, core torque, length, and hook; I found that some things were very important to me while others were not.  Interestingly, the categories that weren’t as important to me were the ones I was unknowingly using to match each ball to certain lane conditions.  I found this even held true for equipment I had owned many years ago.

After a few new ball purchases, it became clear that if I bought a ball that matched the range of Numbers common to my old favorites, it became a new favorite. I wasn't wasting money on balls just to find out I didn't like them; and perhaps best of all, my new "Numbers" balls were so good that they started making the balls I had previously rated as 5s seem more like 4s in comparison!  In several instances a new Numbers ball ended up out-averaging the ball it had replaced by almost 30 pins!

My wife asked me to put my theories to the test, and rated all of the balls she could remember owning for the last 10 years.  I crunched the stats and found that her Numbers ranges and most important categories were quite different from mine.  She bought a ball that matched her top Numbers and tossed her highest series in several years the first night out with it, remarking that it was extremely easy to read and she knew exactly what it was going to do.  When friends and teammates found out what we were doing, they started asking us for their own Numbers. And they also found that when they bought a "Numbers ball" they immediately liked it, could read the lanes great with it, and scored high with it.

Whether you realize it or not, you are better at utilizing some dynamic characteristics than others in your equipment.  You have specific dynamic preferences - your Numbers - that are common to your favorite, most highest scoring balls.   They hold true whether a ball performs best on heavy oil or dry lane conditions; on tough or easy shots.  Discover what your Numbers are and never buy another ball you won’t like!

Tom Wheeler has been bowling for 44 years. At one time or another he has been a proprietor, a pro shop operator, a PBA member, and a TV color commentator. He owns 20 300 games and 16 800 series, and is a member of the Elmira (NY) Bowling Association Hall of Fame. He got his start in the mid ‘70s working for Mo Pinel, and holds a degree in Economics (statistics) from SUNY Potsdam. A simple question - "How is RG measured?" - led to a study of rotational dynamics and its application to bowling balls; and along the way resulted in the discoveries that are the basis of this program.
